Investigations Uncover Safety Lapses in Bangkok Bar Fire
Authorities in Thailand are scrutinizing potential negligence following a devastating fire at a bar in Bangkok that claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals. Survivors have recounted that emergency exits were locked, and the use of flammable materials contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
Fire Origin and Spread
The fire reportedly began near the stage area, and preliminary findings suggest it was triggered by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioning unit, which caused a power outage throughout the venue. According to Police General Kittiratt Phanphet, the incident reflects a "lack of caution" regarding patron safety.
Fire safety expert Busakorn Saensuk, from the Engineering Institute of Thailand, highlighted that exit routes were obstructed, with furniture blocking the main doors and a locked door near the restrooms. These impediments likely prevented many patrons from escaping.
Flammable Decor and Rapid Fire Spread
Busakorn noted that the venue was adorned with highly flammable decorations, including plastic flowers and foam on the ceiling, which fueled the fire's intensity. Witnesses described the stage being engulfed in flames within seconds, leaving little time for escape.
Thotsakan, an indie band performing at the time, lost two members to the tragedy. Survivors described the panic as they attempted to flee the rapidly spreading flames.
Impact on Victims
As of Tuesday, 27 of the deceased have been identified, and over 70 individuals are reported injured, with 24 in critical condition. Structural engineering professor Worsak Kanok Nukulchai explained that many victims may have succumbed to toxic fumes, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, before being reached by the flames.
Regulatory Oversight and Past Incidents
The establishment was registered as a "restaurant with live music," not an "entertainment venue," which exempted it from certain fire safety regulations. Bangkok's Metropolitan Administration is now reviewing safety regulations applicable to both restaurants and entertainment venues.
Interestingly, the bar's owner previously operated another venue in Yasothon province that also experienced a fire in December 2019, although there were no casualties in that incident since it occurred during the day.
The investigation continues as authorities aim to determine accountability and improve safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
